Job Summary:

Veterinary ophthalmologists are highly trained veterinarians specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions and diseases in animals, from common pets like dogs, cats, birds, and exotic species. The expertise of these practitioners in the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the eyes is particularly essential in complex cases, in which they collaborate with general veterinarians to provide specialized care.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the veterinary ophthalmologist include:

Diagnosis of Ocular Conditions:

  • Conducting thorough eye examinations to identify and diagnose various ocular conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases, corneal ulcers, and eyelid disorders; utilizing specialized diagnostic equipment, such as ophthalmoscopes, tonometer, slit lamps, operating ocular microscope.

Treatment Planning:

  • Developing treatment plans for eye disorders, including medical and surgical interventions, prescribing medications, eye drops, or other therapeutic measures.

Surgery:

  • Performing ophthalmic surgeries, such as cataract, corneal procedures, and eyelid surgeries; using surgical techniques to address congenital and acquired eye conditions.

Monitoring and Follow-up:

  • Monitoring the progress of treatment and adjusting the plan as needed; providing follow-up care for post-operative cases.

Diagnostic skills:

  • Interpreting diagnostic imaging results, such as ultrasound or radiographs, to aid in the diagnosis of ocular conditions.

Client Consultation:

  • Educating pet owners on the diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis, and preventive care for ocular conditions; communicating effectively with referring veterinarians and other members of the veterinary care team.

Team Collaboration:

  • Collaboration with Other Specialists in areas such as internal medicine or oncology, to address underlying systemic issues that may affect the eyes.
  • Work closely with veterinary technicians, assistants, and administrative staff to provide comprehensive care.
  • Participate in staff meetings and continuing education to stay updated on the latest veterinary practices and technologies

Emergency Care:

  • Emergency and Urgent Care – providing emergency and urgent care for animals with acute eye issues.
  • Be available for on-call duties as required.

Record Keeping:

  • Maintain detailed and accurate medical records for all patients on software.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and ethical standards in veterinary medicine.

Qualifications:

  • Master of Veterinary Surgery (MVSc – Surgery & Radiology)/PG diploma in Veterinary ophthalmology or other advance veterinary ophthalmology course from an accredited veterinary College or institute.
  • Valid veterinary license to practice in India.
  • Minimum of 2 and maximum of 7 years of experience as a veterinary ophthalmologist.
  • Proficiency in performing a wide range of surgical ophthalmic procedures.
  • Strong diagnostic skills and the ability to interpret complex medical history/data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to animal care.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.
  • Commitment to continuing education and professional development.

Working Conditions:
